A Lot Has Changed…

September 30, 2011

Between Season 1 and Season 2 of Star Trek: TNG.  A summary:

  • Crusher, out (hey, now head of Starfleet Medical!) Pulaski, appears.
  • Ten-Forward suddenly exists, as does Guinan, fully developed.  If I hadn’t seen so much of her in the past watchings, I’d feel very WTF about her.  She just sort of jumps right into the middle of the story and her character.  No development there (which is fine, but noticeable.)  Style of dress, way of talking… all exactly as it would remain.
  • Whil Wheaton has grown 6 inches and 5 years.  A lot of time seems to have passed.  At least he’s rid of the rainbow sweater.
  • Riker has grown a beard and 20 pounds of the 40-60 he will eventually put on.  Suddenly, Pretty Boy Riker has Ceased To Be.
  • Miles O’Brien exists.  I glimpsed him once as an extra in Season 1, nowhere near the transporter room, as I recall.  Not sure if he got his name in this episode but he was there throughout.
  • Geordi has gone from helmsman to Chief Engineer.  Huh?
  • Worf is hairier and has changed his sash thing to metal.  I am assuming that this came with the promotion to Chief Security, though that wasn’t mentioned.
  • Troi is wearing her hair down.
  • The shooting is different somehow.  More advanced technique or cameras or lighting?
  • Troi is immediately raped by a sparkle and gets pregnant.   Her child looks like Adrian Grenier.  More adult themes.

On the other hand…

  • NO ONE has learned their lesson about transporting things aboard the Enterprise that are questionable.  This happens not once but twice in this episode.  Sheesh.
  • Forget Idina Menzel.  Marina Sirtis should be playing Rachel Berry’s mother.
