How to Guess The Dance

October 4, 2011

I entertain myself by identifying what sort of dance the stars will do when they’re introduced, by looking at their costume.  I’m trying to teach the girls to do the same thing.  Here’s my cheat sheet:

Girl looks like she’s wearing a bedsheet draped off one shoulder- Rumba

Guy in untied bow tie- Rumba

Lots of butt ruffles on girl- Samba

Lots of black and/or red- Tango

Slicked back hair on the girl- Tango

Big swirly skirt- paso doble

Anything that looks like a matador, preferably including bare chest or sparkles- paso doble (or Louis Van Amstel on an average Tuesday)

Short flared skirt without ruffles- jive

Pants on a girl- jive

Something involving visible socks on a guy- jive, or Mark Ballas

Traditional looking long swirly gown and/or long gloves on a girl and tux on a guy- waltz, foxtrot

Traditional looking long swirly gown and/or long gloves on a girl with a little more glitter and non-traditional tux or suit in an unusual color/with sparkles/ possibly a hat on a guy- quickstep

Big headdress on a girl- samba
