Tummy Issues

November 30, 2011

Not mine.

For the first time, we have a baby who seems to have tummy issues.  Arching back, grunting, appearing to strain.  The baby poo is totally normal, so it’s not constipation.  According to my sister the pediatric GI specialist, some babies just have trouble.  “You try laying down and taking a poop.  Yep.”

Some seems to be gas, some seems to be not being able to poop.  Either way, poor little bugger seems squirmy and miserable because of it.

Things that seem to help maybe a tiny bit:

  • Giving mylicon drops
  • Holding, especially tummy to tummy
  • Warmth
  • Rubbing his tummy
  • Nursing (that’s when he usually decides to relax and finally goes.)
  • Holding him as vertically as possible.

Bicycling his legs or holding them up don’t help.  He just gets mad.

Anyone with experience in this?  I’m thinking of making a little tummy heating pack and also thinking of trying to cut caffeine and dairy out of my diet for a week or two and see if it helps.  That said, he should grow out of it… but in the meantime, poor baby.

iirc, Autumn did some of the same, though she was a formula and breastmilk baby. I did a lot of tummy laying for her, or rubbing, and rubbed her back. It was soothing, even if it didnt’ help her go all that much. It’s more a tensing, it seems like, rather than a binding up if you get me.
That said, I wonder if, since nursing relaxes him, does holding him in that position with a binky help? That way he’s “nursing” without actually eating anything (which may or may not just add to things) and the body heat might help further relax his little tummy.
Hrm…..I also wonder, if using a heated towel or rolled blankie would help rather than a heat pack, and having that placed on his tummy (or lying him on it) would help.

I’m trying to remember, but it’s been a long time since I had a little baby. I hope the poor little man gets to feeling some relief soon!

sounds like you figured it out on your own! Wish I were more help though. Sounds like he’s going to be Mommy’s boy….for a little bit anyway…they usually are at first. Don’t try telling my teenager that though….he might hurl. 😉
